BETHEL — The Western Mountains Senior College continues its Brown Bag Lunch program next week, when residents will have a chance to speak on the importance of eating local food.

The program is set for 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, at the Bethel Inn Library.

Volunteer Nancy Davis said the series was created to make the college “responsive to a new generation” and to “reach out to a wider community.”

“The Western Mountains Senior College primarily serves its member population of (people) over 50 years old, but also has developed a rich tradition of reaching out to the wider community with free sessions to the public,” Davis said.

Barbara Murphy and Bonnie Pooley will “lead the exploration into how we can all help to address food security issues within our community,” Davis said.

Davis said Murphy served as the inspiration for the initiation of Gardeners Growing Healthy Communities, a South Paris-based garden managed by an enthusiastic group of volunteers, while Pooley will “bring the perspective of the Local Food Connection and the Alan Day Community Garden.”

“Why is it important to eat local food?” she asked. “Where can we buy local produce? If I’m a gardener, how can I improve produce accessibility for my community neighbors? These are some of the questions participants will grapple with at the next Brown Bag Lunch.”

The event is open to the public, free of charge.

Attendees are welcome to bring their lunch.
