JAY — Community members and parishioners from St. Rose of Lima Parish in Jay and St. Joseph Parish in Farmington gathered for a special Shelter the Homeless presentation at St. Rose of Lima on April 10.
The parish organized the event as part of its celebration of the Holy Year of Mercy, declared by Pope Francis to help all have a genuine experience of God’s mercy, both received and given.
Participants of all ages gathered to hear about the work being done in Maine to assist those in need. Presenters included Bill Wood of Catholic Charities Maine; Ruth Oakley, the diocesan director of the Office of Missions/Catholic Relief Services; and Hanna DeAngelis, the assistant director of Catholic Charities Maine’s Refugee & Immigration Services.
As part of the presentation, attendees went through an interactive activity allowing them to “walk the path” of refugees and to learn ways in which Mainers can help.
“Parishioners also learned different aspects of cultural awareness, the challenges experienced and addressed by those who experience relocation, the processes within the missions and immigration field, and how we, the Church, can respond to this work of mercy in a compassionate, proactive and faith-filled manner,” said Michelle Moffett, the parish catechetical leader at St. Rose of Lima.
