DEAR SUN SPOTS: Please, I am looking for a telephone number for the American Diabetes Association. I called 411 for information, but the two phone numbers they gave me have both been discontinued — 342-2383 and 888-449-8057. I’m looking for a booklet on carbs. I’ve called every drug store and it’s unavailable. Thank you. — Shirley, Lewiston.

ANSWER: The American Diabetes Association has a national hotline number, 1-800-DIABETES, or 1-800-342-2383. When you call them, a recording will ask you to choose between menu options. Choosing ‘0’ should put you directly in touch with a representative, and then you can explain the item for which you are looking. You can also visit the organization online at www.diabetes.org. If the book you are seeking happens to be the American Diabetes Association’s featured book on understanding carbohydrates, “The Complete Guide to Carb Counting, 3rd Edition,” then contact Books-A-Million at the Auburn Mall by calling (207) 786-9412. They do not have one on hand, but they are able to order one for you. The cover price for the book is $18.95. You can also order that book and several others right from the American Diabetes Association website.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Girls State is a non-partisan opportunity for high school juniors to learn about responsible citizenship in a democratic society. The Girls State program is a government stimulation in which delegates role play campaigns and elections for local, county and state government. The program takes place at Husson University in Bangor, June 19 through 24. The Rumford American Legion Auxiliary will be sponsoring high school juniors, and those interested may contact Stephanie Wilson at StefanieWilson142@gmail.com. This program is for all female MVHS juniors who are interested in politics and government. There is an application process for the sponsorship from the American Legion Auxiliary. — Barbara, Rumford.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: On May 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Poland High School Project Graduation 2016 will host a yard sale in the faculty parking lot. We are looking for donations for our yard sale. If you’re spring cleaning and would like to donate to our fundraiser, we can make arrangements for these items to be picked up. You can contact Jen Smith at (207) 740-7321. We did a yard sale back in August and experienced great success. We are looking to have another successful yard sale. Thank You. — Jen, Mechanic Falls.
