NEWRY — Registration for Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation summer programs is underway.
Programs will include hiking, paddling, tennis, golf, cycling, and fishing from the coast to the Western Mountains, Marketing and Development Director Deb Maxfield said. Advanced adaptive athletes may participate in ocean and river trips, as well as advanced cycle rides, she said.
Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation is a nonprofit organization that provides year-round education and training in active recreation for individuals with physical disabilities. It aims to teach them self-confidence and self-motivation, as well as help them increase their physical strength and improve self-image.
One of the larger summer events is the Veterans No Boundaries camp from Aug. 19-22 at the Wavus Camp in Jefferson. Maxfield said the camp is entering its 12th season, and is “unique among recreational programs for disabled members of the armed forces in that it focuses on family healing and support.”
On Sept. 17 and 18, Maine Adaptive staff will visit Acadia National Park for programs that include an adaptive cycling equipment demonstration as part of the Maine Outdoor Coalition’s Great Maine Outdoor Weekend.
Maxfield said there are no deadlines for registration, but spaces are limited and lessons are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
