FARMINGTON — It was a ride down memory lane Tuesday for some residents of Edgewood Rehabilitation and Living Center on Route 4.
The center is celebrating National Nursing Home Week with a variety of activities.
Residents patiently awaited Kenric Charles of Freeman Township to go for a wagon ride pulled by Charles’ Belgian horses, Joker, 6, who weighs about 2,300 pounds, and Prince, 9, who weighs about 2,450 pounds.
The residents, volunteers, family members and staff were waiting outside in the porch area. A resident of Orchard Park Rehabilitation & Living Center in Farmington was also brought over for the event.
Resident Peg Harvey of Farmington said she wouldn’t take a ride but was eager to watch the others.
She did enjoy, however, taking a ride during Monday’s activities in an older-style remodeled Jeep.
“I think she liked it,” said her husband, Richard Harvey. “She’s talked about it ever since.”
Resident Gene Wright, also of Farmington, said he was looking forward to riding in the wagon.
“I used to drive the horses,” he said. He had three uncles who had farms and he loved to visit.
He had taken a ride in a Willys Jeep that was in really nice shape, he said.
“It was almost like the one my father used to have,” he said.
Shelley Seavey, the center’s activities director, said the horse and wagon would go down Route 4 for a bit, then turn around and take Box Shop Hill Road and a dirt road branching off that road to come back to the center.
Other activities this week include sundaes on Wednesday and a visit from the Moose Creek Cloggers. On Thursday, residents will have an old-fashioned picnic with egg and Spam sandwiches, watermelon and other foods, Seavey said.
Representatives of the Wilton Farm and Home Museum plan to show a movie Friday and bring in items from the museum.
When the horse and wagon drove up to where residents waited, Charles asked “How are we doing, folks?”
“Better now that you are here,” someone replied.
Once everyone was seated, Knapp nailed the back board on and away they rolled.
“You folks hang on,” Charles said. “We have 2 horsepower here.”
