DIXFIELD — The Regional School Unit 10 board on Monday accepted a withdrawal plan from four of the 12 district towns.

Superintendent Craig King said the agreement will be voted on by residents of Canton, Carthage, Dixfield and Peru during the Nov. 8 general election.

All four towns, which comprised the former SAD 21, must agree to leave RSU 10. If they do, a newly formed RSU 21 would go into effect during the 2017-18 school year.

The movement began more than a year ago when residents said they believe reforming their own district would lower costs. Five years ago, SAD 43, SAD 39 and SAD 21 merged into RSU 10.

The Withdrawal Committee has been meeting for well over a year to draw up an agreement and to devise an educational plan for students.

The next Withdrawal Committee meeting is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 11.

The board’s Buildings and Grounds Committee has set May 16 to tour Hartford-Sumner Elementary School and Buckfield Junior-Senior High School to determine if there is enough space for Hartford-Sumner sixth-graders to attend the Buckfield school.

Hartford-Sumner Elementary School has 330 students, which has led to overcrowding, while Buckfield house about 220 students.

If the board decides to move the sixth-graders, the change could go into effect at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year, King said.

Also on Monday:

• Mountain Valley High School health teacher Kristen Provencher was hired as a new teacher mentor/coordinator; and

• The resignations of Rumford Elementary grade-five teacher April Halacy, Pennacook Learning Center special education teacher Terrence Magee and district technology specialist/web administrator Brian Keene were accepted. Keene will become the full-time web administrator at the Region 9 School of Applied Technology in Mexico.

The May 23 board meeting will be held at the Region 9 School of Applied Technology in Mexico, beginning with a supper at 5:30 p.m. followed by the meeting at 6:30 p.m.
