OAKLAND — Brandon Varney ripped a two-out single in the eighth inning to plate Jared Norcross-Plourde and give Edward Little a 1-0 win over Messalonsklee.

Norcross-Plourde also earned the win on the mound with 12 strikeouts in seven innings of work, and pitched himself out of a big jam in the first stanza.

Reliever Josh Casey suffered the loss after working the final two frames.

Monmouth 14, Mt. Abram 1

MONMOUTH — Sophomore center fielder Avery Pomerleau produced two hits, three runs and three RBIs to lead Monmouth to an overpowering 14-1 victory over Mt. Abram in baseball action Wednesday afternoon.

The Mustangs (9-0) came out strong with four runs in the first inning, and went into full gallop in the fifth with seven more. Nick Sanborn pitched in with a pair of hits and three RBIs.

Second baseman Sam Storer had one of the Roadrunners’ (0-8) two hits with an RBI single in the second inning in the losing effort.

Wiscasset 9, Mtn. Valley 0

RUMFORD — Senior shortstop Darren Wood cracked a bases-clearing double in the second inning as Wiscasset blanked Mtn. Valley 9-0 in baseball action Wednesday afternoon.

Wood had three hits, including the double and four RBIs for the Wolverines (4-5). Tyler Bailey provided three innings of fine pitching, giving up no hits. Bailey contributed offensively with two hits and two RBIs.

Junior pitcher John Pepin tossed two scoreless innings in relief for the Falcons (2-5) in the losing effort.

St. Dom’s 4, Carrabec 2

AUBURN — Senior left fielder Nate Richard doubled home two runs in the second inning as St. Dom’s (7-1) earned a 4-2 victory over Carrabec in baseball action Wednesday afternoon.

Pitchers Mack Pelletier and Gavin Bates kept the Cobras (4-5) off balance with a combined 10 strikeouts.

Senior center fielder Tyler Reichert had an RBI single in the fifth inning for Carrabec in the losing effort.

Lewiston 9, Brunswick 8

LEWISTON — Freshman first baseman Hunter Landry went 3-for-3 as Lewiston held on in the late innings for a 9-8 triumph over Brunswick in baseball action Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue Devils (4-6) were in command for most of the game until a seventh-inning rally by Brunswick. Brock Belanger contributed two hits and two RBIs, while Corey Harvey generated two stolen bases and two runs.

Center fielder Will Bessey led off the seventh inning with a home run that sparked a seven-run rally for the Dragons (1-9). But, Lewiston stopped the bleeding just in time.

Oxford Hills 13, Mt. Blue 2

FARMINGTON — Troy Johnson scattered three hits in four frames and drew ample run support as Oxford Hills overpowered Mt. Blue 13-2 in a Class B baseball tilt Wednesday. 

Matt Smith led the Vikings (6-3) with three hits, while Hunter LaBossiere, Emery Chickering and Jake Spinhirn also had multiple hits. 

Ethan Andrews led the Cougars (1-8) with two hits, while Tom Wing suffered the loss after working the first four innings. 

Winthrop 4, Dirigo 2

WINTHROP — Antonio Mucci belted a three-run triple in the third inning to give Winthrop a 4-2 win over Dirigo in more local baseball action Wednesday. 

Jackson Ladd led the Ramblers (4-4) with three hits, while Jacob Hickey and Greg Fay belted out two hits apiece. 

Cooper Chiasson suffered the loss after working the first four frames. 

Telstar 13, Boothbay 11

BETHEL — Kellen True drove in a pair of runs in the sixth inning to give Telstar a 13-11 mid-season win over Boothbay on Wednesday. 

After starter Josh Eliot left the mound for Telstar, the Seahawks took advantage of reliever Bobby Sicotte in the fifth frame. Boston Ludden stepped in to get the Rebels out of a jam. Tanner Wheeler, Hunter Williamson, Eliot and True had key hits for Telstar.

Boys’ lacrosse

Mt. Blue 7, Lincoln Academy 4

FARMINGTON — Sophomore attackman Reed Wells scored a pair of goals to lead Mt. Blue to a 7-4 victory over Lincoln Academy in boys’ lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore attackman Nathan Simmons recorded all four of the Eagles’ (2-4) goals, two in each of the third and fourth quarters.

Goalie Alex Gilbert led the Cougars (3-2) defensively, making 18 saves in the winning effort.

Maranacook/Winthrop 11, Oak Hill 2

WALES — Ty Smith netted four goals to lead Maranacook/Winthrop to an 11-2 victory over Oak Hill in a boys’ lacrosse matchup. 

Bailey Stockford and Zach Lacasse chipped in for Maranacook/Winthrop with two goals each, while single tallies from Kyle Morand, Tyler Nussinov and Levi Emery completed the scoring. 

Marcus Bailey and Bryce Harlow each found the net for Oak Hill. Isaiah Weston and Will Hayes combined to make 13 saves for Maranacook/Winthrop, while Brandon Michaud (16) and Ethan Richard (5) turned aside 21 shots for Oak Hill. 

Softball

Falmouth 9, Poland 1

POLAND — Julia Treadwell and Emily Beaulieu had two hits, including a double each, as Falmouth cruised to a 9-1 victory over Poland in softball action Wednesday afternoon.

Jessica Collins contributed a pair of hits for the Yachtsmen (5-4).

Sydney Hudson had two hits for the Knights (2-8), including a triple. Sarah Walton chipped in with a double for Poland.

Telstar 25, Boothbay 0 (5 inn.) 

BETHEL — Olivia York pitched three innings of one-hit ball Wednesday as Telstar overpowered Boothbay 25-0 in a lopsided mid-season softball tilt. 

The Rebels (8-1) capitalized on several walks and errors to accumulate many of their runs, yet veteran athlete Becca Howard and Bri Vitale each belted out two hits. 

Nicole Rice went the distance for Boothbay (0-8) and gave up 10 hits overall.

Oxford Hills 5, Mt. Blue 2

FARMINGTON — Anna Piiranen drove in a pair of runs in the fourth inning to give Oxford Hills a 5-2 mid-season softball victory over Mt. Blue on Wednesday.

Piiranen and Hannah Kenney led the Vikings with two hits each, while Cody Akers belted a triple.

Olivia Ryan led the Cougars (2-7) with an RBI triple in the third frame.  

Lewiston 10, Brunswick 3

LEWISTON — Lewiston slugged four doubles on their way to a 10-3 win over the Brunswick Dragons in a KVAC softball contest Wednesday.

Megan Gosselin, Meg Theriault, Jordan Mynahan and Emily Mousseau each had a two-bagger. Gosselin, Theriault and Mynahan each had two RBIs to go with their double.

Lewiston (7-3) scored four in the second, three in the third and another three in the sixth. Lexi Poulin threw a complete game, striking out nine for the Blue Devils.

Brunswick (1-9) scored all three of its runs in the top of the first inning.

Mtn. Valley 18, Wiscasset 1

RUMFORD — Senior catcher Sydney Petrie roped a triple and had four RBIs to catapult Mtn. Valley to an 18-1 victory over Wiscasset in softball action Wednesday afternoon.

The Falcons (4-3) posted seven and six runs in the second and fourth innings, respectively. Senior short stop Karen Flaherty chipped in with two hits, three runs, an RBI and six stolen bases for Mtn. Valley.

Third baseman Stephanie Jones furnished the bulk of the Wolverine’s offense with two hits, a run and a stolen base in the losing effort.
