RUMFORD — Rumford and Mexico selectmen have voted to extend the contract of Town Manager John Madigan Jr. to Jan. 1, 2017, giving them time to decide on his replacement.

Madigan announced last month that he would retire in June and pursue a run for the state Legislature, but offered to stay on to help with the transition.

His contract was to expire in June.

Richie Philbrick, chairman of the Mexico board, said his board will sit down with Rumford selectmen in the near future to discuss a path forward, which will include whether or not to share a town manager.

Brad Adley, chairman of the Rumford board, said that meeting will not take place until after the June 14 elections. Rumford selectmen decided to wait until the new board was in place.

The 66-year-old has served a combined 20 years as town manager in Mexico and Rumford. He was once town manager for both Mexico and Dixfield for a seven-month trial period.
