DIXFIELD — A committee studying the possible withdrawal of four towns from Regional School District 10 is waiting for state approval of its plan, member Barbara Chow said at Wednesday night’s meeting.

The effort by Dixfield, Canton, Carthage and Peru was undertaken to maximize education opportunities and best utilize available funding, a committee member said.

The four towns were members of SAD 21 until they merged with SADs 43 and 39 in 2010 to form RSU 10 in 2011.

RSU 10 also includes Rumford, Mexico, Byron, Roxbury, Buckfield, Hartford, Sumner and Hanover. The district has about 2,600 students.

The school board on Monday accepted the withdrawal agreement, which will be voted on by residents of Canton, Carthage, Dixfield and Peru on Nov. 8.

Chow said if the state approves the plan, a public hearing will be held in June.

The committee includes four people from each of the four towns: a selectmen, a school board member, a representative of the initial petitioning committee and a member at large. They have been working for more than a year on the withdrawal agreement and an educational plan for about 800 students from the four towns.

The committee’s next meeting is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at Dirigo High School in Dixfield.
