Here we go again — Phyllis St. Laurent is willing to compromise a city and its people for self-gain by building more housing for low- or no-income people (story, Sun Journal, May 12).
The voters of Lewiston had recently voted to stop further housing, as it has such an impact on local hospitals, schools, police and the city’s welfare roles.The taxes that the new housing will bring in will not even begin to offset the cost of schooling the additional children that residents of a couple of four bedroom apartments can generate.
As the saying goes, “Build it and they will come.” At whose expense?
Lewiston officials should be inviting more job creators rather than more welfare. The city deserves to get away from the title of “welfare city” and look ahead to prosper.
It has been long enough.
