FARMINGTON — Police are investigating a break-in at the Care and Share Food Closet at 508 Fairbanks Road, where more than $100 worth of food was stolen, Deputy Police Chief Shane Cote said.

Sgt. Michael Adcock is investigating the burglary, which was reported Monday. Entry into the pantry was forced.

The pantry is on the lower level of the Fairbanks School Meeting House and is a program of the Farmington Area Ecumenical Ministry.

“This was highly unusual and we hope anybody in need of food will contact us at 778-0508,” Executive Director Leiza Hiltz Scerbo said. “We are open quite often.”

The food closet is open from noon to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, she said. If there is an emergency need, people can call and leave a number and a representative will get back to them, she said. They deliver to people who need food but cannot leave their home.

“It is very disappointing for sure,” Hiltz Scerbo said. “It is a sad day when something like this happens. We are here for them.”

The food closet serves residents from Farmington, West Farmington, Farmington Falls, New Sharon, Chesterville, Temple, New Vineyard, New Portland and North New Portland who meet federal eligibility guidelines.

The food closet serves 400 families a month, she said.
