YORK (AP) — Multiple vehicles were left either damaged or totaled after a 71-year-old Maine man lost control of his car while trying to pull into a parking space at a shopping center in York.

Police say Vaughn Kailian was trapped inside his sport utility vehicle after he struck a parked car in the Meadowbrook Plaza parking lot around 9:55 a.m. Monday. Sgt. Brian Curtin says it appears that Kailian’s SUV “quickly accelerated” just before the crash.

The impact flipped Kailian’s SUV onto its side, where it came to rest against two unattended vehicles. The parked car careened through the U.S. Route 1 lot and struck another vehicle.

A group of bystanders righted Kailian’s vehicle and he was extricated by firefighters. He was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where he’s in stable condition.
