LEWISTON — SeniorsPlus has received a $10,000 grant from the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation to develop a downtown dining site and cooking classes.

Included will be interpretation and written translation for older adult refugees. The site will open in 2017.

The program will focus on cooking and sourcing nutritious food, including local farm food, as well as creating a hub for social interaction. SeniorsPlus will work with the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center and Healthy Androscoggin to develop the program.

“Our focus groups of new Mainer older adults revealed that greater socialization was what was most desired,” said Betsy Sawyer-Manter, executive director of SeniorsPlus. “And good food is universally the ideal conduit for positive social interaction.”
