NEW GLOUCESTER — A garage burned flat on Gloucester Hill Road early Friday night in flames that spread from a woods fire.

Crews from several area towns helped battle the blaze at 77 Gloucester Hill Road but by the time the flames were brought under control, the oversized two-car garage was a total loss, with damage estimated at $150,000.

The cause of the fire was unknown.

At about 5:30 p.m., New Gloucester Fire and Rescue was called out for a report of a woods fire that was spreading toward the garage.

When firefighters first arrived, they founds heavy fire from the rear of the building, estimated to be 25 wide and 60 feet long. In addition to the car bays, the garage also had a partially finished second floor which had been used as office space, fire officials said.

New Gloucester crews were assisted by firefighters from Poland, Gray, Pownal, Durham and North Yarmouth, who helped battled the blaze for two hours before it was brought under control.

Gloucester Hill Road is located between Church Road and Route 4. Fire officials said their efforts were hampered by inaccesibility of water and by a partially collapsed metal roof.

Nobody was hurt in the blaze. The cause remained under investigation later Friday night.

The identity of the property owner was not immediately available.
