DEAR SUN SPOTS: In a recent paper, I read where someone was having a craft/vendor fair at the Simard-Payne Memorial Park in Lewiston. I don’t remember if it was June or July, and now I can’t find it again. They were advertising tables and booths for rent. Could you use your excellent sleuthing skills and find more info for me? DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have noticed lately that the court logs are no longer in alphabetical order. Is there a reason for this? — Joe, No Town.
ANSWER: Once again, Sun Spots defers to Sun Journal Executive Editor Judy Meyer for her expertise in any changes that take place within the paper’s pages. Here is her response:
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Maine’s courts have recently undergone a radical change to a Unified Criminal Docket, or UCD, system for all criminal cases. Rather than two levels of case management in district and superior courts, all cases are now managed in one tier.
The change was instituted to streamline cases and reduce the number of times defendants and attorneys need to appear in court for each case. According to the Judicial Branch, the UCD was also designed to increase efficiency in the clerks’ offices in each county by eliminating the duplicative workload when cases were transferred from district to superior courts.
The cases are now organized by docket number, in chronological order of the date each case was filed. So, when the courts produce what are called Closed Case Reports for the Sun Journal, the cases are listed in order of docket, not name.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Now that Time Warner has been bought out by another company, how do we find out what our prices are going to be or any other changes that are coming up? — No Name, No Town.
ANSWER: According to news reports, you likely won’t see any immediate changes other than a soon-to-be implemented name change (to “Spectrum”) now that Charter has acquired Time Warner Cable and the smaller cable company, Bright House.
No need to panic just yet. Charter CEO Tom Rutledge told employees in an email message, according to a CNN Money report by Brian Stelter, that the company would eventually “streamline our product pricing and packaging,” but an information page set up on the TWC website assures customers that no changes are immediately pending following the merger. Watch your mailboxes for more info.
