NEWRY — Residents will vote on three questions Tuesday, June 14, including whether to continue pursuing withdrawal from School Administrative District 44.
Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Town Office.
After agreeing to do so, selectmen decided to add two additional questions:
* Whether to amend the Fire Department Ordinance; and
* Whether to settle a boundary issue at Head of the Tide Cemetery.
Residents voted in September 2014 to authorize the Withdrawal Committee to investigate options for leaving the district, which also includes Bethel, Greenwood and Woodstock. The committee and SAD 44 board have not reached an agreement to present to Newry voters.
Newry has few students, but its high property valuation means it pays about $3 million a year toward the $10 million annual school budget, according to published reports.
A committee has been formed to study a new funding formula.
Assistant Town Clerk Laura Lowell said the amendments to the Fire Department Ordinance include changing the term of chief from two years to one year, having one assistant chief instead of two, and adding the position of captain.
The amendments are to make the ordinance the same as the department’s bylaws, town officials said.
