GRAY — The School Administrative District 15 board has named Craig King as the finalist for superintendent.

King is superintendent of Western Foothills Regional School Unit 10 in Dixfield, which serves approximately 2,600 students in 12 communities, according to information released Friday by SAD 15.

King will visit Gray-New Gloucester schools next week to meet with students, staff and community members as part of the final decision on assuming the position.

SAD 15 Superintendent Bruce Beasley will leave June 30 for a position in Colebrook, N.H.

The search attracted 16 applicants.

King is a Fort Kent native and graduate of Fort Kent public schools and the University of Maine at Fort Kent. He has been a Peace Corps volunteer, elementary school teacher, high school teacher, assistant principal and principal. Prior to becoming superintendent in RSU 10, he served as principal of Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham for nine years.

King holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, and a doctorate of educational leadership from the University of Southern Mississippi. He completed his superintendent’s licensure program at the University of Maine.

Until a final decision is made on the superintendent’s position, the district has contracted J. Michael Wilhelm of Casco as interim superintendent. He will assume interim duties July 1.

Wilhelm served as superintendent of Topsham schools for 12 years before his retirement. In recent years he was named interim superintendent for RSU 13 in Rockland and then superintendent of RSU 16 in Poland. He was named Superintendent of the Year in 2003.
