RANGELEY — A Peru man wanted on several warrants and burglary of a Carthage store was arrested Monday after a local resident reported seeing a truck that was reported stolen, Lt. David St. Laurent of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
Chief Deputy Steven Lowell arrested Matthew Haines, 23, without incident on a complaint of being a fugitive from justice from New Hampshire and several warrants, St. Laurent said.
One of those warrants is from Franklin County for felony burglary and misdemeanor criminal mischief and theft related to a burglary at Bradbury’s Market & Diner in Carthage, the lieutenant said.
Haines is accused of smashing in the front door of the store on June 8 with a shovel and stealing several cartons of cigarettes, totaling approximately $310, according to a release from Lt. David Rackliffe of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
Haines also has outstanding warrants out of Oxford County.
Haines, who police previously said is from Farmington, N.H., is also accused of walking away from a New Hampshire pre-release center June 6, Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said Friday. Franklin County and other law enforcement agencies have been looking for Haines for a week.
Deputies received information from the Milton Police Department in New Hampshire on Monday that Haines had likely stolen a 2013 Ford F-350 truck from his employer on June 8, according to Rackliffe.
St. Laurent commended the Rangeley resident who spotted the stolen truck at about 6:40 p.m. and reported it to the Sheriff’s Office. Rangeley police and several deputies responded.
Haines is being held without bail at the Franklin County jail in Farmington.
