It was delightful to read two letters complimenting the Lewiston Public Works Department. Rick McIlveen (May 27) was pleased with the job they did sweeping his neighborhood; Steve Stantial (June 24) was happy with repaired winter damage after he called them.

Dispatcher Debbie  is always glad to help; always has a warm smile and a hug.

I have the privilege of being the self-appointed den mother to all of them for 15 years. Every day I get up at my home on No Name Pond I know I still have it because of the city and Public Works. The water and sewer department worked very hard through a cold snowy winter in 2001 to give my 10-home neighborhood a community septic system with a pumping station to carry waste 1,800 feet away from the pond to protect it.

We are so lucky to have these dedicated men and women. I give them cookies and hugs, getting to know them. I made a photo album of them and showed it to City Administrator Ed Barrett.

Four times a year, the employees pay for a cook and serve a buffet. Invitations are sent to retirees. I get to cook and serve and am able to greet each person.

On April 27, at the annual buffet, I had a surprise 80th birthday party with flowers, gifts, a cake and a card with notes from personnel. On their faces was warmth and affection for me, their adopted Mom. I was so touched, I needed help to blow out two candles.
