DEAR SUN SPOTS: Social Security monthly benefit payments are paid “in arrears.” The letter writer (Saturday, July 16) was accurate in his statement that the Social Security benefit payment “for June” to his wife who died on June 29 had to be returned. But that statement was misleading because the author implied that he was required to return the payment his wife received during June. However, the payment received during June was the payment to which she was entitled because she had survived through May. But because she did not survive through June, the payment she receive “for June,” which would have arrived in July, had to be returned. — No Name, No Town.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Many thanks to you and your readers. My letter asking for help in locating Beverly Hayward was read by a family member and a friend. She called me a few hours later and does indeed want her Girl Scout book. It turns out that we have a lot of places and friends in common, even though we are of different generations. She even got married in the church in East Sumner that I attend. It is such a delight to make a new friend and know that there are many people who are willing to go out of their way to assist another. — Cyndy, Sumner.

ANSWER: Thank you for sharing. Sun Spots loves to hear when her readers are able to connect in such positive ways.
