The man who died during an apparent home invasion at a Rangeley apartment Thursday is a 29-year-old New York man, investigators said on Friday.

State Police identified the victim as Michael Bokun of Manhattan. The state medical examiners office said Bokun died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

A second man was injured during the home invasion, identified by police as 48-year-old Hector Munoz of New York City.

Munoz was treated for a head injury at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Upon release, police said, Munoz was arrested on a charge of being a fugitive from justice out of New York. He was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn where he was being held without bail.

As of late Friday afternoon, investigators were still not identifying the man who lives at the house where the confrontation occurred. That man remained hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident occurred at 2564 Main St., according to police. The building there has two apartment units overlooking Rangeley Lake and the altercation occurred in one of the apartments.

One local man who said he was familiar with the incident reported that the man living in the apartment was attacked by the two New York men who burst into his home at about 1:30 a.m.

The homeowner was stabbed in the attack, the source said, but he used a gun and possibly a baseball bat to defend himself, killing one of the suspects and injuring the other.

Police have not commented on a motive for the attack, although investigators did acknowledge that they were looking into a possible drug connection.

Neighbors reported that visitors were frequently in and out of the home where the shooting occurred, with up to ten different cars a day parking there. Some suggested that the trafficking of methamphetamine as well as oxycodone and other painkillers has been a problem in areas of Rangeley.

State Police evidence technicians spent part of the day inside of the home Friday, officials said. It was not disclosed what evidence was recovered.
