DEAR SUN SPOTS: I think your readers should know something that has not been too widely advertised. A lot of dehumidifiers have been recalled due to danger of causing a home fire. Some of these are Frigidaire, GE, Kenmore and several others made by a company named Gree. The companies don’t know who owns the units unless a registration form has been filled out and mailed back to the company. To find out if yours is one of them, you can go online. Use Google to search for your brand name recall. This will let you know if it is is on recall list. Then you will be instructed how to proceed. In some cases you will receive a complete refund on your purchase price. I would hate to see anyone lose their home or life over something I know about. — Donald, No Town.

You are correct that there are a number of recalled dehumidifiers — 13 brands in the U.S. and Canada to be exact — manufactured by Gree. This recall is a few years old, initiated in September of 2013 and then expanded a few months later in January of 2014. The recall covered products produced in China and sold between January 2005 and August 2013.
If anyone has a dehumidifier kicking around that they purchased in that time frame, it can’t hurt to check the brand against the recall list.
