WOODSTOCK — The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Tuesday evening to donate $1,000 to the Tri-County Babe Ruth 14-and-under team, mostly made up of Oxford County children.

The baseball team, coached by Gary Williamson, Tom Morton and Janek Luksza, came within a victory of becoming national champions in 2015, and are seeking another run at the title this year when they compete in Westford, Massachusetts.

The team is made up of children from Woodstock, Hebron, Bridgton, Harrison, Stoneham, Waterford, Norway, South Paris, Rumford and Mexico.

Town Manager Vern Maxfield told the Board of Selectmen that they had donated $1,000 to the team last year when they competed in Jamestown, New York.

“They didn’t ask for a number this year, but last year, they asked for $500, and we ended up giving them $1,000,” Maxfield said. “We’ve already spent $1,000 from that particular reserve account when we gave money to other local teams.”

“Are we draining that reserve?” Chairman Ron Deegan asked Maxfield.

“Yes,” Maxfield said. “By the time we get to work on fixing the (Whitman) ball field, it’ll be below $10,000.”

Deegan said it was “all good money being spent.”

Selectman Mike Nadeau agreed and made a motion for the board to approve $1,000 for the baseball team.

In other business, Maxfield told the board that renovations on the 40- by 80-foot Maine Department of Transportation building on Route 232 that the town purchased this year should be completed by Labor Day.

The building will be used as a base for PACE Ambulance and Rescue Services, and for storage of additional town vehicles.

Maxfield said the building is ready for wiring and plumbing. The sheetrocking and construction is completed, and the cabinetry and shower stalls are installed, he said.
