CARTHAGE — A Massachusetts man suffered severe head injuries Friday night when the ATV he was driving veered off a dirt road, struck a tree, rolled over and landed on top of the driver, Maine Warden Kris MacCabe said.
Patrick Adduci, 23, of Boston was heading back to a camp on Sweet Carroll Lane, off Basin Road, when the accident occurred at 8:11 p.m., MacCabe said.
Adduci was listed in serious condition at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston on Tuesday, a spokeswoman said.
The accident was still under investigation Tuesday.
It appears that speed and inexperience are possible contributing factors, MacCabe said.
The ATV had come up over a small knoll and veered off the dirt road and hit a birch tree head-on before it rolled over and went into a ditch landing on top of Adduci, MacCabe said.
The lights on the ATV stayed on and alerted responders to Adduci’s location. He was found with the ATV still on top of him.
Adduci was not wearing a helmet and suffered severe head injuries, MacCabe said.
He had been riding with another person, but that person had already returned to the camp.
A Med-Care Ambulance crew worked on Adduci before he was taken to a ball field in East Dixfield to meet a LifeFlight medical helicopter, which flew him to CMMC.
