Recently, Gov. Paul LePage proudly introduced presidential candidate Donald Trump who, in his speech, disparaged a group Maine citizens.
Perhaps LePage was unaware that Trump was going to insult Maine with his bigoted remarks regarding citizens who immigrated to the U.S. from Somalia, or who are the children of Somali immigrants. But by failing to denounce at least that part of Trump’s remarks after the speech, LePage is exhibiting the same level of bigotry to citizens of his own state, many of whom live in his former hometown.
Somali immigrants in the area are workers, business owners (i.e., job creators), office holders, accomplished students and athletes (go Blue Devils soccer). Like immigrant communities before them, they add to the economy, culture and vibrancy of this state and nation.
It is discouraging to see a presidential candidate exploiting ignorance and bigotry. Unfortunately another despicable demagogue currently occupies the Blaine House, embarrassing Maine and insulting Maine’s citizens.
