BRUNSWICK — Tests examining water quality in more than two dozen private wells near the former Brunswick Naval Air Station have detected no evidence of harmful chemicals in private water systems.
The Navy’s tests on 27 private wells in the area between the former base’s southeastern edge and state Route 24 found that levels of perfluorinated compounds, or PFCs, were either undetectable or well below the health advisory.
Health officials say exposure to PFCs can reduce immune system function and potentially cause cancer.
Bill Franklin, spokesman for the Navy’s Base Realignment and Closure Program, says the Navy is preparing to launch another round of testing in a neighborhood north of Bath Road.
The Navy has spent more than $100 million cleaning up pollution at the former base, which was closed in 2011.
