RANGELEY PLANTATION — A New Hampshire couple and their dog were rescued from Mooselookmeguntic Lake on Sunday afternoon after their canoe tipped over as they were headed to Toothaker Island.

Emily Lord, 29, and Darin Radatz, 30, both of Middleton, New Hampshire, were wearing life jackets, which is probably what saved their lives, Warden Patrick Egan said Monday.

The waves started to pick up and the canoe appeared to have too much weight and it began to take on water. They were headed to a campsite on Toothaker Island, Egan said.

The couple and their dog were OK, Rangeley Fire Chief Tim Pellerin said.

His department launched its rescue boat and a couple of civilian boats, including one from Bald Mountain Camps, that carried firefighters out to the couple.

The people on the first boat to reach them were able to get the couple and their dog out of the water and take them safely to shore, he said.

The couple used a cellphone to call for help, Pellerin said. The call came in at 3:44 p.m.

Most of their belongings were retrieved, Pellerin said. They had packaged them in material so that they would float.
