ROXBURY — The Roxbury ATV Riders will host its annual Maine Children’s Cancer Mystery Ride on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 1162 Roxbury Notch Road.
A barbecue will kick off the event at 4:30 p.m and the ride will begin around 6 p.m.
Mike Worthley, club president, said the annual ride began as a show of compassion for sick children. “We started doing (the ride) for a couple of kids we knew that had cancer. We wanted to help them out and we’ve been doing it since.”
Adults and children pay $5 for the barbecue meal. The ride is $5 for adults and children ride free.
This will be the fifth ride that donates all proceeds to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. Last year, the ATV club donated over $2,000. This year they hope to raise more.
“Last year we had 93 people (participate). If we get at least 100 this year, we’ll do great,” Vice President Roland Patneaude said.
“(The ride) starts at my house,” Worthley said. “We have hamburgers, hot dogs and french fries beforehand. There’s also a 50/50 raffle happening this year. Folks bring their own ATVs, but if anyone has any extra space people are welcome to ride along.”
All funds raised are presented to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program at their walk-athon, which will be held Sept. 17 at multiple locations across the state.
As for the ride, Worthley said, “It’s always a mystery where we’re going.”
Residents who can’t attend are encouraged to send donations to Roxbury ATV Riders, P.O. Box 196, Roxbury, ME 04275.
Donations can also be made at Roland’s Automotive at 708 River Road in Mexico.
