NORWAY — The Police Department is teaming up with the Oxford Hills General Assistance administrator to provide school supplies to children in need.
“As a single mother familiar with the (Temporary Assisance for Needy Families) program, I remember the stress of having to supply school supplies for my children,” Administrator Shannon Moxcey said. “There’s not a lot of organizations offering school supplies to families in need, so three years ago, I started collecting school supply donations for children who needed them at the start of the school year.”
Moxcey said the Police Department is participating for the first time.
“The department is always trying to do things with local students, so we asked them if they wanted to participate,” she said. “They’re 100 percent behind it.”
Moxcey and the department have been collecting supplies for several weeks, but recently received an influx of requests from families seeking assistance.
“I thought we had enough (supplies), but as the beginning of the school year gets closer, we’ve had a lot of families coming in, looking for some help,” she said.
Moxcey said there is need for more binders, pens and pencils.
“We also need a couple more backpacks,” she said.
Families requesting help should provide her with proof of residence and the number of people in their household.
“At the start of the school year, I’ll make phone calls to the families, and they can come pick up their supplies, if they qualify,” she said.
Those who wish to donate may call the Town Office at 743-6651 and ask for Moxcey.
