AUGUSTA — Maine legislative leaders are scheduled to discuss their response to Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s obscene tirade against a Democratic legislator.

Although Democrats continue calling for LePage’s resignation, it’s unclear if Republicans will support impeachment or resignation. LePage says he won’t resign.

Democratic and Republican leaders are meeting Thursday.

Republican House Minority Leader Ken Fredette says his caucus opposes a $43,000-a-day special session, necessary for impeachment proceedings. Republican Maine Senate President Mike Thibodeau has called for “corrective action” and is polling his caucus.

LePage last week left a lawmaker an obscene voicemail and then said he wished it were 1825 so they could duel and LePage could point a gun at him. LePage apologized, saying he believed the lawmaker had called him a racist.

Many lawmakers are also upset that LePage blames heroin trafficking on blacks and Hispanics.
