WATERVILLE (AP) — Maine State Police detectives and local police are investigating after an unidentified body was pulled from the Kennebec River in Waterville.

Authorities say the body was found floating in the river near the Lockwood Dam at Ticonic Falls around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Waterville firefighters recovered the body near the riverside parking lot of the Hathaway Creative Center shortly before noon. Fire Chief David LaFountain says firefighters used a boat to reach the body, which was pushed up against the gates by the dam.

Authorities say they’re not ready to classify the death. Investigators are trying to determine how long the body was in the water.

It’s unclear if an autopsy has been performed on the body at this time.
