The Black Bears’ schedule began with a three-time defending champion with something to prove (Oak Hill). Now they face the Greyhounds, who are coming off a tough loss. Yikes.
Mt. Blue (0-1) at Brewer (1-0)
Friday, 7 p.m.
Last week, Cony quarterback Taylor Heath passed all over Mt. Blue. This week, the Cougars need to make sure Witches running back Trey Wood doesn’t run all over them.
Leavitt (0-1) at Morse (1-0)
Friday, 7 p.m.
Depending on how one looks at it, the Hornets fell 21 yards or about 21 seconds short against Westbrook last week. The Shipbuilders dominated Gorham in their opener.
Yarmouth (1-0) at Mtn. Valley (1-0)
Friday, 7 p.m.
Kyle Farrar scored five touchdowns and kicked seven extra points (5×6=30+7=37 points) in the Falcons’ rout of Gray-New Gloucester. The Clippers likely will be tougher to score on.
Portland (0-1) at Edward Little (1-0)
Friday, 7 p.m.
The Red Eddies, coming off a nice win over Bangor, have the honor of facing 2015 state runner-up Portland the week after the Bulldogs were stunned by Scarborough. This ain’t no trap game.
Oxford Hills/Buckfield (0-1) at Lewiston (0-1)
Friday, 7 p.m.
The Vikings will be out to prove that playing Cheverus fairly close last week was for real. The Blue Devils want to show that they’re better than their 33-point loss to Windham.
Cape Elizabeth (1-0) at Poland (0-1)
Friday, 7 p.m.
Losing to a team that hadn’t won since 2014 is a tough start to a season. It gets tougher for the Knights this week against the experienced Capers.
Lake Region (0-1) at Spruce Mtn. (0-1)
Friday, 7 p.m.
A matchup with the Lakers might be just what the inexperienced Phoenix need after a humbling loss to Wells. Spruce Mountain hasn’t had much trouble in this series.
Fryeburg (0-1) at Gray-NG (0-1)
Friday, 7 p.m.
The Patriots and Raiders each scored only six points in their season-opening losses last week. Whether they win or lose, Week 2 should at least be more enjoyable for both squads.
Winthrop/Monmouth (1-0) at Traip (0-0)
Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
The Rangers are the second team given the opportunity of opening the 2016 season against the Ramblers, who were in midseason form against Lisbon in last week’s opener.
Old Orchard Beach (0-0) at Oak Hill (1-0)
Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
Raiders coach Stacen Doucette spent time scouting the Seagulls and said he was impressed. So this might be tougher than last year’s 42-14 win over Old Orchard Beach. Maybe.
