WILTON — The Board of Selectpersons on Tuesday awarded a contract to Ransom Consulting Inc. for the Forster Mill cleanup.

The bid of $26,200 was the only one received from the six requests for proposals sent out, Town Manager Rhonda Irish said. The town worked with the company on the first phase assessment of the mill and also on the Wilton Tannery project, she said.

Hiring the consultant is the first step toward the cleaning up and demolishing the mill, Irish told the board. The consultant will oversee the work and make sure it is done correctly.

The position has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency as part of the requirements for the $200,000 federal grant the town received in May.

In other business, work on the downtown revitalization project is expected to begin Monday, she said. A contract for the work was awarded last month to Pratt & Son of Poland for $365,922.

The town has received over $3,200 toward the gazebo project in Bass Park over the last few weeks, she said.

The Recreation Committee started fundraising for a larger gazebo with a $500 donation from Barclaycard last month.

The plan is to have a new gazebo built this fall or by May at the latest, so events such as concerts or art shows in the park could be scheduled throughout next summer, Frank Donald, recreation director, said. The present gazebo will be moved to Bishop Park in East Wilton.

The Recreation Committee is hoping to raise between $6,000 and $8,000 for the project. Donations may be left at the Town Office and designated for the Bass Park gazebo project.

For more information or to donate, contact Donald at the Recreation Department by calling 207-645-4825.
