RANGELEY — The Rangeley Lakers stormed out to a 3-0 lead and held on to a 3-2 victory over the Greater Portland Christian Lions in girls’ soccer action Saturday.
Lauren Eastlack scored twice to lead the Lakers, and Brooke Egan scored a breakaway goal. Egan also had and assist, as did Olivia Pye.
The Lions (0-2-1) scored both of their goals in the final 20 minutes, with Natalie Smith and Madi Grant each scoring a breakaway goal.
Amber Morrill made four saves for Rangeley (2-1-1) while Megan Smith made nine saves for GPC.
Monmouth 9, Boothbay 0
MONMOUTH — Emily Grandahl netted four goals in Monmouth’s 9-0 rout of Boothbay on Saturday in MVC girls’ soccer action.
Audrey Fletcher scored two goals and assisted on three others for the Mustangs, who improve to 4-0. Haley Fletcher scored one goal and assisted on four, and Libby Clement and Sarah Scott added one goal apiece.
Monmouth goalkeepers Katie Harris (two saves) and Destiny Clough (one save) combined for the shutout. Boothbay goalie Jackie McLoon made 10 saves.
St. Dom’s 2, Old Orchard Beach 0
AUBURN — Sophomore halfback Abbie Suckow scored the eventual game-winning goal eight minutes into the game as St. Dom’s grabbed their first win with a 2-0 decision over Old Orchard Beach in WMC girls’ soccer play Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore midfielder Kristina Cornelio added a tally on a penalty kick 11:32 into the first half for the Saints (1-2).
Goalie Tiffany Leclair made 12 saves for the Seagulls (0-4), while Abby Castonguay turned aside 10 shots to earn the win in net for St. Dom’s.
Lisbon 3, Dirigo 0
LISBON — Kaylin Le scored the first goal of the contest in the second half as Lisbon dashed to a 3-0 victory over Dirigo in girls’ soccer action Saturday afternoon.
Emma Houle launched a long -distance shot from 18 yards away for the Greyhounds’ (3-0-1) second goal. Freshman Giana Russo scored on an assist by Jasmin Le to round out the scoring for Lisbon.
Goalie Mackenzie Ladd made six saves for the Cougars (1-3-0). Ali Sult earned her second straight shutout for Lisbon.
Boys’ Soccer
Edward Little 1, Bangor 0
BANGOR — Ahmed Fafi scored early in the second half to pace the Edward Little Red Eddies to a 1-0 victory over the Bangor Rams in KVAC Class A boys’ soccer action.
Joel Mufese set the goal up for the Red Eddies.
Both teams move to 2-1 on the young season.
Carrabec 1, Telstar 0
BETHEL — Dustin Crawford placed a penalty kick into the back of the net to lift Carrabec to a 1-0 victory over Telstar in boys’ soccer action Saturday afternoon.
With 54 seconds remaining in regulation, the Rebels’ defense was called for a penalty in the box. Crawford responded with the only goal of the game for the Cobras.
Lisbon 6, Dirigo 0
DIXFIELD — Ryley Austin scored a hat trick as Lisbon cruised to a 6-0 victory over Dirigo in boys’ soccer action Saturday afternoon.
The Greyhounds (2-0-1) dominated on offense, outshooting the Cougars (0-3) by a margin of 25-6. Nick Lerette, Bradley Boulet and Cam Poisson scored the remaining tallies.
Goalie Colin Woodhead made 19 saves for Dirigo, while Jonah Sautter prevented six shots to earn the win in net for Lisbon.
Mt. Abram 4, Oak Hill 0
WALES — Mt. Abram had four different goal scorers and its defense limited Oak Hill to just one shot, propelling the Roadrunners to a 4-0 victory in boys’ soccer action Saturday afternoon.
Sam Storer netted the Roadrunners’ (2-1-1) first goal and added an assist on the second tally. Dylan Starbird assisted on the first and fourth goals for Mt. Abram.
Goalie Marcus Bailey made 15 saves for the Raiders (1-2), while Xavier Romanoski turned back one to earn the win in net for Mt. Abram.
Field Hockey
Edward Little 2, Mt. Ararat 0
TOPSHAM — Kaylie Vallee scored two goals in the second half to give the Red Eddies a 2-0 road win over Mt. Ararat on Saturday.
After the teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half, Vallee scored three minutes into the second. She added the second goal with three minutes left in the game. Oceanna Chamberlain and Elizabeth Bellman had the assists.
“We dominated the game, we just had trouble scoring,” Red Eddies coach Greg Perkins said.
Edward Little goalkeeper Delaney Morneau made four saves. Haley Frizzle had 20 saves for Mt. Ararat.
Brunswick 4, Lewiston 1
LEWISTON — Lauren Grocholl scored the eventual game-winning goal with 2:30 left in the first half as Brunswick sailed to a 4-1 victory over Lewiston in field hockey action Saturday afternoon.
Maddie Wayne scored the opening goal and recorded the assist on Grocholl’s tally for the Dragons.
Kasey Talarico scored the Blue Devils’ lone goal in the losing effort.
Poland 3, Gray-New Gloucester 0
GRAY — Hwida Nawass scored with 13:15 remaining in the first period as Poland galloped to a 3-0 victory over Gray-New Gloucester in field hockey action Saturday afternoon.
Lexi Morey made the score 2-0 two minutes after Nawass’ game-opener for the Knights (2-2) . Brianna Doucette added an insurance goal in the second half.
Goalie Alicia Credit repelled 30 shots for the Patriots (0-5), while Poland’s Ashton Sturevant turned back the only shot she faced to earn the win.
Messalonskee 5, Oxford Hills 1
WATERVILLE — Kaitlyn Smith netted a pair of goals as Messalonskee chalked up a 5-1 victory over Oxford Hills in field hockey action Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles (2-2) were propelled by successive goals by Smith, and a subsequent assist on Saige Knight’s tally.
Ciara Hamlin posted the Vikings’ (3-1) only score in their first loss of the season.
Goalie Anna Huff made nine saves for Oxford Hills. Julie Vigue turned back four shots to earn the win in net for Messalonskee.
College field hockey
UMaine-Farmington 6, Becker 0
LEICESTER, Mass. — Junior Emmah Spahr recorded a hat trick as the University of Maine at Farmington took a 6-0 shutout victory over Beck College on Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers (3-0) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first six minutes. Jenessa Talarico of Lewiston scored her first goal of the afternoon in the fourth minute off an assist from Emma Martineau of Greene. Less than two minutes later, Spahr posted her first goal of the game.
Patty Smith and Alyssa Arseanult split time in goal to earn the shutout win for the University of Maine at Farmington.
Bates 4, Hamilton 3
LEWISTON — Jessie Moriarty knocked in a rebound from Taylor Lough for an eventual game-winner as Bates secured a 4-3 victory over Hamilton College on Saturday afternoon.
Following a Continentals (0-2) goal in the seventh minute, the Bobcats (2-0) took over the lead with back-to-back tallies from Isabel Garcia-Moreno and Hannah McLane.
Goalie Julie Booth collected seven saves for Hamilton, while goalkeepers Adelae Durand and Alyssa Souza stopped four to combine for the win.
Men’s soccer
UMaine-Farmaington 2, Pine Manor 0
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Freshman Jake Heimlich tallied a pair of goals to lift the University of Maine at Farmington to a 2-0 shutout victory over Pine Manor College in men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers (2-1) only fired three shots on goal in the defensive battle, but two of the three came from the foot of Heimlich and found the back of the net.
Goalikeeper Matt Wilson had a busy afternoon with eight saves as the Gators (1-2) lined 18 shots in his direction. He earned his first shutout win of the season.
Hamilton 1, Bates 0
LEWISTON — The Bates men’s soccer team got a number of spectacular saves from sophomore goalkeeper Robbie Montanaro but could not get on the scoreboard in a 1-0 loss to Hamilton on Saturday afternoon.
Montanaro made five saves for the Bobcats (1-1).
The Continentals (1-1) wasted no time grabbing an early lead, scoring on their first shot, just three minutes and 42 seconds into the game. Alex Cadet found Mike Lubelczyk, who blasted the ball into the back of the net.
Women’s soccer
Hamilton 3, Bates 1
LEWISTON — Julia Rosen found the back of the net in the 61st minute, but it was not enough as Bates fell to Hamilton 3-1 in women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
Down 2-0 at the half, the Bobcats (1-1) made their move when Olivia Amdur delivered a perfect ball into the box and Rosen finished to cut the Continentals’ (1-1) lead to 2-1.
In the 77th minute, Jessie Murray beat her defender on the left side and slipped a shot that rolled into the coner of the net to give Hamilton some insurance.
Goalie Emily Dumont had six saves for Hamilton, while goalkeeper Sarah McCarthy finished the match with six saves for Bates.
Emerson 6, UMaine-Farmington 1
BOSTON, Mass. — Bridget Humphrey tallied her first goal of the season in the 56th minute to break Emerson’s shutout, but the University of Maine at Farmington remains winless after a 6-1 defeat in women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
The Lions (2-2) were powered by a pair of goals and an assist from Paige Haley, and another two goals from Elizabeth Foley.
Mikayla Cameron of Monmouth made seven saves for the Beavers (0-3) in the losing effort.
Women’s cross country
WATERVILLE — The Bates women’s cross country team outscored Colby 80-30 in its first official meet of the 2016 season, the Bates-Colby Class Wave Races, Saturday at Colby.
Senior captain Jessica Wilson ran the fastest time of the day, winning the senior/sophomore race in 14:41 over an approximately 2.44-mile course, and leading a sweep of the race’s top six places. Senior captain Molly Chhisholm took second in 15:42, followed closely by sophomore Wendy Memishian in 15:43.
Bates also swept the top five places in the first-year/junior race, led by the junior tandem of Katherine Cook and Mary Szatkowski in first and second places with identical 15:36 times. First-year Olivia LaMarche was third in 15:48.
Men’s cross country
WATERVILLE — In its first official meet of the 2016 season, the Bates-Colby Class Wave Races, the No. 35 nationally ranked Bates men’s cross country team was edged by the 27th-ranked host Mules 61-49 Saturday afternoon.
Colby outscored Bates 35-20 in the junior/senior race, but Bates outscored Colby 29-26 in the freshman/sophomore race.
First-year James Jones took first place in the freshman/sophomore race, finishing the race in 20:21, which was 14 seconds ahead of runner-up and first-year teammate Justin Levine. Sophomore Ryan Betz was third on the Bobcats and fifth overall 21:21.
Senior Nick Orlando led the Bobcats in the junior/senior race, placing fifth overall in 20:25. Junior Zach Magin placed sixth in 20:08.
