NAPLES  — Nick Newman broke through with a pair of touchdowns, one each from seven and three yards out, to pace the Mountain Valley falcons to a 34-7 win over Lake Region in a Class C South showdown Friday.

Lake Region started the game with a touchdown and put the Falcons back on their heels.

“They came out fired up,” Mountain Valley coach Pat Mooney said. “They were ready to play. They play tough, they have good, physical offensive line and it took us a quarter to get our bearings. Once we got our wind, we turned it around.”

Newman scored his first TD of the game to even the score after one quarter, and the Falcons soared into halftime with a 20-7 lead after Todd McKellick and Jacob Blanchard rumbled into the end zone.

Newman and Dylan Desroches scored in the fourth to ice the game and another big win for the Falcons.

Buckfield 2, Rangeley 1

BUCKFIELD — Noah Wiley adeptly eluded the defense and pushed the ball past the goalie in the 78th minute to lift Buckfield to a 2-1 victory over Rangeley in boys’ soccer action Friday afternoon.

The Lakers (2-2-2) scored first as Carl Trafton nudged the ball through the air and into the cage.

Ethan Jackson tied the score before the half for the Bucks (2-1-1) with a laser shot from 25-yards out.

Goalie Hunter Lowell made 14 saves for Rangeley, while goalie Jake Kraske prevented six to earn the win in net for Buckfield.

Buckfield 1, Rangeley 0

BUCKFIELD — Kali Litchfield converted a relay from Julia Dow to lift Buckfield to a 1-0 triumph over Rangeley in girls’ soccer action Friday afternoon.

The Bucks (3-1) held field possession for most of the contest. The Buckfield deffense of Katy Henderson, Abby Fogg and Mickenzie Chretien kept the Lakers’ (3-2-1) offense at bay throughout.

Goalie Amber Morrill made 10 saves for Rangeley, while goalie Kaylee Harvey fended off one shot to earn the win in net for Buckfield.

Edward Little 1, Hampden 1

HAMPDEN — Edward Little and Hampden played to a 1-1 tie in field hockey action Friday afternoon.

Lauren Berube scored the first goal of the game during first half for the Red Eddies. The goal was assisted by Piper Norcross and Kylie Bureau on a free kick.

The Broncos scored with 3:00 left in second half. Aubra Linn converted a relay from Marissa Gilpin off a corner.

Goalie Taylor Depot made 10 saves for Edward Little,  while goalie Emily Dysart had seven saves for Hampden.

Field hockey

Hall-Dale 2, Telstar 1 (OT)

BETHEL — Helena Homes netted the game-winner with just one minute remaining in overtime as Hall-Dale notched a 2-1 victory over Telstar in field hockey action Friday afternoon.

The Rebels (0-5) scored first with a goal from Natasha Hart for a 1-0 led at the half.

The Bulldogs (1-4) evened the score with a tally from Leah Allen in the second half that ended regulation at 1-1, forcing overtime.

Goalie Perry Morton made 11 saves for Telstar, while goalie Kaylee Magee stopped nine to earn the win in net for Hall-Dale.
