SCARBOROUGH (AP) — Maine is looking to create more room for New England cottontail rabbits, a species that once was a common sight in the state.

The state’s Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife plans to improve some habitat for the rabbits within an area of its Scarborough Marsh Wildlife Management Area.

The agency says that will involve removing some trees, planting shrubs, and minimizing spread of invasive plants. The timber removal is slated to take place in the early months of 2017.

Biologists with the agency will discuss management plans for the rabbits on Sept. 27 at the Scarborough Municipal Building. A site visit will follow on Sept. 30.

The rabbits were once commonly seen in Maine from Kittery to Belfast but state wildlife authorities say their numbers diminished as habitat vanished.
