HAMPDEN — The Mt. Blue Cougars defeated the Brewer Witches 3-0 in a Class A North preliminary round contest held at Hampden Academy on Saturday.
William Salisbury had a goal and an assist to lead the Cougars (3-9-2). Tristin McFarlane and Sam Smith also scored, while Hunter Bolduc had an assist on Salisbury’s goal.
Both goalies, Tucker Carleton of Mt. Blue and Drew Baker of Brewer (6-7-2), made three saves.
Mt. Blue will now travel to Edward Little to face the top-seeded Red Eddies in a quarterfinal Tuesday.
College football
Maine 28, Rhode Island 21
KINGSTON, R.I. — Josh Mack ran for 115 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown run, to help lead Maine to a 28-21 win over Rhode Island on Saturday.
Dan Collins threw for 147 yards and two scores for the Black Bears (4-3, 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association). Both of Collins’ TD tosses went to Micah Wright, who finished with 97 yards.
Despite the close final score, Maine never trailed.
Mack went 65-yards on the opening drive for an early 7-0 Black Bears lead.
The Rams battled back, tying the score at 21-21 early in the fourth when Jordan Vazzano found Aaron Parker on a 65-yard touchdown strike. But two possessions later, Maine broke through with the game winner on a 43-yard throw-and-catch from Collins to Wright.
Rhode Island had a final chance to tie, but Vazzano’s Hail Mary was intercepted.
Vazzano finished with 347 yards and two TDs, but was picked off five times.
Middlebury 28, Bates 9
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Jared Lebowitz passed for 394 yards and three touchdowns as Middlebury overcame an early 9-0 deficit with 28 unanswered points in a 28-9 homecoming victory over Bates College in football action Saturday afternoon.
Following a possession by both teams, sophomore punter Justin Foley put the Bobcats (1-4) in good position by bouncing his punt out of bounds at the Middlebury 1-yard line.
On the first play, the handoff went to Drew Jacobs, who spun around one tackler in the end zone before he was wrapped up by senior linebacker Mark Upton for the safety and a Bate’s 2-0 lead.
The Bates’ offense then took over at its own 49-yard line and on third down, quarterback Sandy Plashkes hit wide-open junior reciever Brian Daly in stride over the middle. Daly sprinted untouched into the end zone for a 48-yard touchdown.
From that point on, the Panthers (5-0) remained undesturbed. Lebowitz completed 35 passes on 56 attempts for 394 yards, with three touchdowns and two interceptions.
Women’s basketball
Central Maine CC 61, UNB Saint John 54
AUBURN — Down by three with three minutes to play in regulation, Central Maine Communicty College mustered up a 10-0 run to pull away from the University of New Brunswick at Saint John for a 61-54 season-opening win in women’s basketball action.
With just over a minute to play, freshman guard Kristina Blais of Lewiston hit a pull-up jumper to give the Mustangs (1-0) the lead.
Brooke Reynolds of Poland forced another turnover, and Tianna Harriman of Auburn found Seve Deery-Deraps of Rangeley for a deep three to put the Mustangs up by four.
Reynolds played a stellar all-around game, finishing with 10 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Harariman tallied a game-high 12 poins, while Jenny Schlim poured in 11 points and eight rebounds.
Deery-Deraps hit two huge second half three-pointers to finish with eight points in the winning effort.
Men’s soccer
Bates 3, Middlebury 2 (OT)
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Senior forward Peabo Knoth scored the game-winning goal in overtime to propel Bates College to a 3-2 victory over Middlebury in NESCAC men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Julien Williamson passed in behind to Knoth, who tapped the ball around the keeper for his third goal of the season and securing the Bobcats’ (6-6-2) first victory over Middlebury since 2012.
Senior forward Matt DiVite paced the Bobcats attack, scoring two goals.
Women’s soccer
Middlebury 3, Bates 0
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Amy Martin assisted on all three goals as Middlebury defeated Bates 3-0 in NESCAC women’ s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers (12-2) scored all three of their goals in the second half.
The Bobcats (4-9-1) had their best chance in the 75th minute on a corner kick from sophomore Olivia Amdur. Amdur’s kick set up senior captain Allison Hill, who headed the ball towards the net.
Colby-Sawyer 3, UMaine-Farmington 1
FARMINGTON — Colby-Sawyer defeated the University of Maine at Farmington, 3-1, in NAC women’s soccer action on a rain-soaked Leib Field Saturday afternoon.
Senior midfielder Lizzie Jorgensen got the Charges (6-8-1) on the board first. Olivia Kurowski put the initial shot on goal that bounced off the right post and found the waiting Jorgenson, who fired it in for her team-leading seventh goal.
The Beavers (7-9) spoiled the shutout with two minutes left to play in the contest. Lydia Roy scored off a rebound of her own penalty shot that was initially saved by keeper Marissa Williams.
College field hockey
Middlebury 3, Bates 0
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Lauren Schweppe collected a pair of goals as Middlebury ended Bates’ four-game winning streak with a 3-0 decision in NESCAC field hockey action Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (8-6) had the first scoring opportunity in the fourth minute of action when sophomore Taylor Lough fired a nice shot on goal that forced keeper Emily Milelr to make a good kick save.
In the seventh minute, the Panthers (11-3) struck for their first of three goals when Emma Johns carried the ball up the field and delivered a perfect feed to a wide open Grace Jennings.
NAC East field hockey pairings announced
WATERVILLE — The University of Maine at Farmington has claimed the top seed for the 2016 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Division Field Hockey Championship.
The Beavers (9-4) earned the top seed in the conference tournament after posting a 4-1 record in NAC play.
On Wednedsay, October 26, the University of Maine at Farmington will host Thomas College, while Colby-Sawyer will travel to Husson College.
Semifinal winners will square off for the East Division Championship title on Saturday, October 29.
The NAC East champion will take on the NAC West champion, which will be played at Castleton University on Saturday, November 5th. The NAC Crossover Champion will recieve an automatic berth to the 2016 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship.
