What is the most pressing problem in your district and what do you plan to do about it?
Many of my constituents struggle to get access to quality, affordable health care. Many live paycheck to paycheck. I will continue to fight for Drugs for the Elderly programs, federal funds for MaineCare, and holding pharmaceutical companies accountable. We must increase compensation for workers, which also will stimulate the local economy.
Gov. Paul LePage wants to eliminate the state income tax. Do you support that? If not, why not?
Elimination of income tax — especially for the wealthy — puts an increased burden on property taxpayers. The sales tax would likely increase, too. It could cause damaging cuts to education. These changes would amount to a further shift of the tax burden to working and middle class people.
Are you willing to support raising the fuel tax to fix Maine roads? If not, why not?
Wear and tear on our vehicles due to so many bad roads costs us money. Therefore, a very modest increase in the fuel tax might save us money and certainly make for a more pleasant commute.
The relationship between the governor and the Legislature has deteriorated over the past six years. What can the Legislature do to improve that relationship?
The members of the Legislature must continue to do our jobs — work together on bills, continue constituent services, collaborate in good faith in our committees — whether the governor decides to participate or not.
What methods do you support to reduce opiate addiction in Maine?
Prevention and access to treatment are especially critical. We must persist with appropriate law enforcement, as well.
