LIVERMORE FALLS — Fire Chief Edward Hastings IV said at Tuesday’s selectmen meeting that his department is working with the American Red Cross to install free smoke detectors for residents who want them before winter.

He said a planning meeting was scheduled mid-month, followed by a meeting to spread information about the program.

“I think it’s important for us to get something out before wintertime and again during springtime,” Hastings said.

He said Pittston has installed 250 free smoke detectors for its residents.

“They’re the best you could buy,” Hastings said.

The Fire Committee recently held a meeting to discuss repairs to the fire station. At an October special town meeting, residents rejected financing a new building.

“Basically, what we talked about in the meeting is we looked at the current fire station and the different replications that have been generated, and find out where we need to go,” Hastings said.

Selectman Ron Chadwick said the main goal to was get the Fire Department back in the building as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Selectman Tom Barker asked Hastings if any decision had been made on having a firetruck stationed in the East Livermore section of town. Hastings said the only viable spot was a garage being constructed on West Loop.

“I’m not for or against it either way,” he said.

Barker pointed out that if a truck was stationed in East Livermore, it would reduce insurance costs for residents there.

In other action at the meeting, Town Manager Kristal Flagg commended Livermore Falls Police Officer Darien Nadeau for his quick thinking in assisting a 79-year-old man who had fallen into a well on Oct. 11. Nadeau responded to the residence and discovered the man was in water up to his chest.

After failing to reach him, Nadeau located a ladder and lowered it into the well, where the man eventually climbed to safety.

“Your quick thinking and dedication to the citizens of this community is an example to the kind of officers we strive to employ at the Livermore Falls Police Department,” Flagg said.

In other business:

• Selectmen reappointed Melissa Crocker to a three-year term on the Budget Committee;

• Flagg noted the Town Office will be closed Nov. 8 for elections at the polls from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m; and

• The Livermore Falls Water District reminds residents that despite recent rains, they should conserve water because water levels are still below normal.
