PORTLAND — A Maine dermatologist is on trial on charges of taking more than $2.3 million in illegal medical deductions, illegally distributing prescription medications and fraudulently writing prescriptions for a woman who wasn’t a patient.

Dr. Joel Sabean pleaded not guilty in federal court in Portland last year.

The woman testified in court Wednesday that she started having sex with Sabean when she was 12 or 13, and that it continued for years. She eventually settled in Florida and said Sabean began sending her money after that.

Sabean hasn’t been charged with any alleged sexual abuse. One of his lawyers said the woman engaged in a scheme to bilk him of millions of dollars and lied about their relationship.

The Associated Press generally doesn’t identify people who say they are the victims of sexual assault.
