LEWISTON — The Maine State Police Unsolved Homicide Unit is seeking information about a 14-year-old boy who died at his South Paris home 27 years ago in a fire that was determined to be an arson.
Steven O’Neil, an eighth-grader at a local school, had helped his stepparents and two younger stepbrothers escape their home through a second-story window before O’Neil succumbed to smoke inhalation and died Nov. 3, 1989, according to a posting on the Maine State Police Facebook page.
An investigation at that time revealed that the fire was set with a flammable liquid and O’Neil’s death was considered a homicide.
According to an entry on the Maine State Police website, a suspect had been interviewed in the case.
