SCARBOROUGH (AP) — Town officials see an opportunity if the owner of Scarbrough Downs succeeds in selling the harness-racing track and property in Maine.
The Maine Sunday Telegram (http://bit.ly/2fstowK ) reported that a contract with investors seeking to bring a casino to the site expired last month. Andrew Ingalls, the listing broker, believes the 483-acre property could be used to create a downtown for Scarborough.
Owners say the 66-year-old track suffers from dwindling profits and attendance, competition from casinos, aging facilities, and controversy with horse owners.
Owners say the biggest problem is poor attendance. In 1980, nearly 10,000 people visited the track, and a record $508,000 was wagered in a single day in 1987. But the newspaper noted that the track is lucky to get 300 spectators these days.
