PARIS — A Sweden man pleaded not guilty Monday morning to bringing more than 600 doses of heroin from Massachusetts for resale in Western Maine.

Derek Verrill, 27, appeared before Active-Retired Justice Robert Clifford in Oxford County Superior Court and pleaded not guilty to Class B unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs and Class C illegal importation of scheduled drugs.

A Class B crime carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years and a maximum fine of $20,000, while Class C crimes carry a penalty of up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

According to an affidavit written by Fryeburg police, Verrill, along with Sweden resident Gayle Gilmore, were arrested in April after Fryeburg police officers, Oxford County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Maine Drug Enforcement agents stopped and searched their 2007 Toyota Corolla in Fryeburg.

Police said that during their search, they found Verrill and Gilmore had 60 grams of heroin, or 600 dosages, with a street value of $10,000 to $12,000.
