BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College women’s basketball team ran away with a 90-40 win over Central Maine Community College on Friday on the opening night of the Marcia Graef Classic at Morrell Gymnasium.
The contest served as an exhibition contest against a non-NCAA sanctioned school for the Polar Bears, who will open their regular season officially against Norwich on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bates College in the second leg of the same tourney.
The Mustangs drop their first contest of the year and fall to 8-1.
Bowdoin wasted little time putting the contest out of reach, sprinting to a 27-3 lead after one quarter and not allowing a field goal by CMCC until 4:31 remained in the second quarter.
Fifteen players scored for the Polar Bears, led by 17 from Ally Silfen. Kristina Blais led CMCC with 11 points, while Taylor Esty added nine.
Norwich 55, Bates 39
BRUNSWICK — The Bates women’s basketball team opened the season Friday night with the first game of the inaugural Marsha Graef Memorial Classic, falling 55-39 to Norwich University on the neutral court of Morrell Gymnasium at Bowdoin College.
Heather LeBlanc led the Cadets (1-1) with 23 points — including the 1,000th of her career — and 12 rebounds.
Senior captain Allie Coppola (Tarrytown, N.Y.) paced the Bobcats (0-1) with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Bates will host the second day of the tournament Saturday. Bowdoin (1-0) and Norwich face off at Alumni Gymnasium at 2 p.m., followed by Bates taking on Central Maine Community College (8-1) in an exhibition game at 4 p.m.

DeSales 71, Bates 70, OT
WORCESTER, Mass. — Marcus Delpeche hit a game-tying three to force overtime but the Bates men’s basketball team fell just short in a 71-70 loss to DeSales Friday night in the WPI Ted Coghlin Memorial Tournament to begin the 2016-2017 season.
Delpeche scored 15 points while twin brother Malcolm Delpeche led the Bobcats with 16 points. They each grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
The Bobcats (0-1) took a 60-59 lead with 1:34 to go in regulation on a Marcus Delpeche layup. But Joseph Lococo responded with a jumper for DeSales to put the Bulldogs up 61-60 with 1:05 remaining. Lococo led all scorers with 21 points on 6-14 shooting.

Bates 9, Mount Holyoke 0
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. — The No. 16-ranked Bates women’s squash team opened the 2016-17 season with a dominating 9-0 victory at No. 28 Mount Holyoke on Friday.
The Bobcats (1-0) looked in midseason form against the host Lyons (2-3), sweeping each matchup on the ladder in three games apiece.
In the No. 1 matchup, sophomore Kristyna Alexova downed Brandy Williamson 11-7, 11-7, 11-7, the closest match of the evening. At the No. 2 position, freshman Luca Polgar defeated Ragini Ghose 11-2, 11-8, 11-4 in her collegiate debut. Sophomore Vicky Arjoontopped Allison Shilling at No. 3, 11-4, 11-6, 11-6.
Men’s hockey
Vermont 6, Maine 2
BURLINGTON, Vt. — The University of Maine hockey team’s road woes continued Friday night.
The Black Bears failed to score despite a 17-7 shots-on-goal edge in the first period, and the University of Vermont Catamounts made them pay dearly in the second period by scoring four unanswered goals en route to a 6-2 Hockey East victory at the Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Vermont improved to 7-3-1 overall with its third straight win. Vermont is 3-2 in Hockey East.
UMaine fell to 4-7-2 and 1-4, respectively, and the Black Bears are now winless in their last 12 road games (0-10-2) dating back to a 5-4 win at UMass on Jan. 30. UMaine is now 1-7-2 over its last 10 games and 0-4-2 on the road.
