NORWAY — Snow and rain held off on Saturday, resulting in a crisp, wintry day for the 40th annual Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce Christmas parade in Norway.
Spectators of all ages from all over the county lined Main Street in Norway to watch the various floats, firetrucks and antique tractors chug along, with riders often throwing candy to outstretched hands.
Fifteen to 20 floats participated in the parade, dubbed the largest parade in Maine. The floats were judged before their journey from the intersection of Main and Whitman streets to Market Square in South Paris. They were separated into three categories for judging — small business, large business and nonprofit. No small businesses registered their float to be judged.
John Williams, executive director of the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce, said they encourage businesses to have floats for two reasons: promoting and entertaining.
“It’s just a great community thing, and it’s become tradition for a lot of people,” said head judge Debra Partridge.
The parade started at 11 a.m sharp this year, and Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant held the role as grand marshal, due to his recent Community Service Award for his work on the war against drug addiction.
Gallant, following police cars in a bright orange Dodge Charger, beamed and waved at spectators as he revved the engine. Following him were firetrucks from about 13 different towns, honking and sporting spinning lights, gold garland and wreaths. Following them were the various floats and antique tractors, some elaborately decorated, and some relying on traditional simplicity to please parade-goers.
Fletcher’s Candy Store, as part of the Norway Historical Society’s annual fundraiser, opened its doors for one day only, selling a wide variety of treats to those with a sweet tooth.
Sisters Alyssa and Adreanna Adams assisted Marion Howe and Anita Hamilton in selling the treats, crediting Howe with keeping the fundraiser going all these years.
“It’s really her vision,” Hamilton said.
