The preamble to the U.S. Constitution states: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
To me, “We the people” means that if the popular vote for president was in effect, we, the people, would know, in our hearts, that our individual votes would count, instead of a selected few from each state deciding for the whole country who the next president would be.
I feel that our representatives should really listen to the people and follow through to fulfill the public’s needs, instead of deciding for us about everything.
Great people from the past, such as Maine Sen. Margaret Chase Smith and Sen. Edmund Muskie, really believed in the popular vote.
Let us all, together, reflect deeply on the inspired words of our forefathers, pray together and do our part to reverse this present fear-based trend. Let us hope for a more prosperous and peaceful future for our children and grandchildren.
