JAY — Alex Bessey and the Spruce Mountain girls’ basketball team lit up Maranacook on Monday, 57-37.
Bessey finished with 26 points, including four 3-pointers, to go along with five steals and five assists. Haley Turcotte added 12 points and six rebounds, and Morgan Dalton had seven points, six assists and five steals.
The Phoenix led 24-10 after one quarter and 49-16 at halftime.
The Black Bears were led by Grace Despres, who had 12 points, and Amanda Goucher, who finished with 10.
Boothbay 66, Dirigo 29
DIXFIELD — Boothbay cruised from the start in its 66-29 girls’ basketball victory over Dirigo on Monday.
The Seahawks (4-0) jumped out to a 22-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and added to their advantage over the next two quarters. They were led by 22 points from Faith Blethen and 16 from Page Brown.
The Cougars (1-3) were led by the 10 points of Ashley Perrault. She also had five rebounds. Alexa Varnum added nine point and nine boards.
Boys’ Basketball
Lisbon 76, Boothbay 63
BOOTHBAY HARBOR — Lisbon survived a long-distance barrage and defeated Boothbay 76-63 in boys’ basketball action Monday.
The Seahawks made 19 3-pointers in the loss. Kyle Ames made four of those treys and led all scorers with 25 points.
Tyrese Joseph paced the Greyhounds with 22 points. Jonah Sautter added 18, and Henry Doyle and Sean Scott each finished with 12.
Madison 54, Telstar 45
BETHEL — The Madison boys’ basketball team remained undefeated by beating Telstar, 54-45, on Monday.
Mitch Jarvais put up 15 points for the Bulldogs (4-0), and Nick Morales contributed 13 points to the win.
Jarrett Bean notched a double-double for the Rebels, with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
“He’s a monster,” Telstar coach Mike Pelletier said. “He’s not even 6 feet tall, and he hasn’t had game this season where he didn’t get double-digit rebounds.”
Bean sank four 3-pointers. Tanner Wheeler added 11 points for the Rebels (1-2).
Women’s Basketball
WPI 51, Bates 44
LEWISTON — Bates College fell at home, 51-44, to WPI on Monday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Bobcats were without leading scorer Nina Davenport and key reserve Kelli Kennedy, who missed the game due to injures.
Bates held their own, for the most part, without Davenport and Kennedy, and outscored WPI in three of the four quarters. That other quarter, though, doomed the Bobcats: in the third quarter, they were outscored 24-5 by the Engineers.
Lyse Henshaw led Bates with 18 points.
The Bobcats’ next game is against MIT on Thursday, Dec. 29 at the Salem State Holiday Classic.
