PALMYRA (AP) — The Maine State Police says one of its troopers rescued an owl that appeared to have been hit by a vehicle on Interstate 95, but the bird later died.

Police say Trooper Bernard Brunette was driving northbound in Palmyra on Thursday morning when he noticed the owl in the snow bank on the median. The bird was a young barred owl that had apparently been hit.

Police say Brunette put his jacket over the owl and secured it in his cruiser. The Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/2i5N4qP ) reports the bird died later in the day after being taken to rehabilitation facility Avian Haven in Freedom.

Barred owls are large owls known for their distinctive “who cooks for you, who cooks for you all” call.
