PARIS — A woman and a child escaped injury Wednesday evening when the woman’s car struck a utility pole on Oxford Street, splitting the pole in half and sending live wires into the road, an official said.

Fire Capt. Mark Blacquiere said fire and police personnel and the PACE paramedic service responded to the scene at about 7:45 p.m. and found the pair in the car with the utility pole’s tension cables draped over it.

The cables, which stabilize the pole, are not live, but the live wires attached to the poles were in the road, he said.

The road was immediately shut down and the woman and child were instructed to stay in the car, Blacquiere said. It took about 20 minutes for Central Maine Power Co. to respond to the scene and shut down the power. The pair were treated at the scene.

The names of the occupants were not available Thursday.
