1937 – 2017

AUBURN — David H. Lowell, 79, of Auburn died peacefully at home Monday, Jan. 2, with his family by his side.

Born Aug. 8, 1937, in Minot to Harry and Thelma (Bailey) Lowell, he grew up in Turner and graduated from Leavitt Institute in 1956. He married Anne Hamel of Hebron on July 8, 1961, and moved to Michigan to work in his brother’s business.

David returned to Maine in 1963 continuing his career as a master mechanic, working at several local garages over the years. Often sought out to work on everything from small tractors to large trucks and heavy equipment, there wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix or anybody he wouldn’t help. David was also an accomplished woodsman and looked forward to his yearly pilgrimage to the Fryeburg Fair, where he enjoyed visiting with other woodsmen and catching up on the latest equipment. In recent years, he really enjoyed exploring around the state of Maine with friends, especially his good friend Fritz Gurschick of Turner.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Anne (Hamel) Lowell of Auburn; his son, Tracy and wife, Beth, of Colorado; daughter, Kelly Baril and husband, Randy, of Turner; four grandchildren, Sierra Fontaine of New Jersey, Alyssa Lowell of Colorado, Brooke Pizzarelli and husband, Bobby, of Auburn, and Ashley Lowell of Colorado; sister, Phyllis Glendenning and husband, Fred, of Farmingdale; brother, Hibbert and wife, Bonnie, of Michigan; sister-in-law, Rose of Michigan; former son-in-law, Wayne Fontaine of Turner; and step-grandson, Seth Fontaine of Auburn.

He was predeceased by two brothers, James of Michigan and Parker of Hebron; and sister, Emma of Michigan,

The family would like to extend our sincerest appreciation to the men and women of the Endoscopy Minor Surgery Unit at Central Maine Medical Center who treated Dad more like an old friend than a patient during his weekly visits. Doctors Kenneth Brodsky, Mark Branda and James Parker also deserve special mention for their excellent care and deeply caring attitudes.
